The Stations of the Cross is a practice that dates back to the early Church. People would make a
pilgrimage to the actual places where the events of Jesus' Passion took place. When it became
impossible to visit those places, the practice of constructing "stations" started so that someone
could follow the story in prayer within a Church or special garden constructed for this purpose.
That's the other important thing to know about the Stations of the Cross, it is a PRAYER. Simply
scanning through them isn't the intention. We are to stop and imagine the scene as if we were
there. Each reflection is accompanied by saying prayers. Certain prayers or responses have
become custom in the Church. Many additional prayers or thoughts to ponder have been added
and vary greatly. Here in the Learning Center, we want you to be able to recite what all fourteen
Stations are. We also give you the ability to pray these Stations at your own pace, whenever you
get on the internet. But remember, we are a Community as Christ's Church, so when your Parish
offers the Stations (usually during Lent), you should attend them in person!
